American Foxhound

American Foxhounds are good-natured, minimal-maintenance hounds who get on kids, dogs, even cats, but come with important considerations for potentially interested owners. They are closely associated with Revolutionary personalities and the rolling estates of old Virginia.

American Foxhounds are smooth, rangy hunters renowned for their speed, endurance, and work ethic. You can identify the American Foxhound apart from their British cousin the English Foxhound by length of legs. The American’s legs are much longer plus much finer boned’ and by the American’s slightly arched loin (back end). American Foxhounds have large, soft eyes which has an expression described as gentle and pleading. Up until now, so good.

Nevertheless, Foxhounds come with important issues to consider. They require lots of exercise or they could get depressed and destructive. A Foxhound’s single-minded prey drive must be controlled. Their loud bawling is melodious to hound lovers but can become a nuisance to neighbors, and training and housebreaking these individual souls can be a difficult challenge for novice owners.
